May 21 (UPI) -- Playoff hockey and basketball pack the weekend schedule, as athletes compete to claim the ultimate prize in their respective sports. A major golf title also is up for grabs in Kiawah Island, S.C.

A trio of NASCAR races in Austin, Texas, and dozens of regular-season soccer and MLB games provide even more entertainment for sports fans from Friday through Sunday.

The PGA Championship tees off the weekend slate, with the 156-player field taking aim on the longest course in the history of PGA Tour major tournaments. Rory McIlroy is a two-time winner of the event and is favored to win again Sunday on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

The tournament airs through Sunday on ESPN and CBS. McIlroy is looking to win his first major title in nearly seven years. Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau are among the other players expected to contend for the Wanamaker Trophy.

Brooks Koepka stepped off the course as the co-leader Thursday with a 3-under par 69 in the first round, but Corey Conners finished the day with a two-stroke lead on the field at 5-under par.

Koepka and fellow golfers said they expect it to be a challenge to control their drives because of harsh winds forecast through the weekend.

"It's a major. I'm going to show up," Koepka told reporters Thursday. "I'm ready to play. ... I love it when it's difficult."

Stanley Cup Playoffs

The COVID-19 pandemic-ravaged NHL regular-season schedule finally is complete, but caution carries into the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This weekend is all about playoff hockey. Eight teams flood the ice for a dozen games as the 16-team field narrows.

The Boston Bruins host the Washington Capitals in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference series. The Bruins lead that series 2-1 and can move to within one victory of advancing with another win. Game 4 starts at 6:30 p.m. EDT Friday and airs on NBCSN.
