March 7 (UPI) -- Six-time All-Star forward Blake Griffin agreed to a short-term contract with the Brooklyn Nets, his agent confirmed Sunday night.

League sources told ESPN and The Athletic that Griffin is signing a deal to join the Nets for the remainder of the 2020-21 season. According to ESPN, the Nets are using one of their veteran minimum contract slots to add Griffin.

Griffin informed Nets general manager Sean Marks of his decision to sign with Brooklyn on Sunday evening. The high-flying star cleared waivers Sunday night after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Detroit Pistons on Friday.

The 31-year-old Griffin will join a Nets roster that already includes perennial All-Stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

The Pistons acquired Griffin -- the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft -- in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in January 2018. During his three-plus years in Detroit, he posted averages of 20.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and five assists over 138 games.

Injuries have greatly altered Griffin's production over the past two seasons. In the 2019-20 campaign, he averaged a career-worst 15.5 points and 4.7 rebounds in only 18 games.

Griffin averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists for the Pistons across 20 games this season.
