Thunder's Andre Roberson gifts grandmother money to adopt grandchildren

Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Oklahoma City Thunder guard Andre Roberson gifted a special holiday surprise to one grandmother who wanted to legally adopt her grandchildren.

The woman could not afford the estimated $7,500 adoption fee required to adopt her grandkids. Roberson made that dream come true on Sunday.

"I was touched by the little kids and the family overall," Roberson said, who met the family through a shopping spree at a retail store. "I got wind that she was trying to adopt them for awhile, but she needed a little assistance. So, I wanted to do something special for her."

The family was sitting courtside prior to the Thunder's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. Roberson extended his gift to them in what was a special moment.

"I wanted to give you a little special something from me," Roberson said to the grandmother after walking out of the tunnel. "After I met you guys, you guys really touched me and I wanted to give you guys a little Christmas gift."

Roberson handed the grandma an envelope with a touching note and a donation of $7,500.

"Dre, really?" she asked through tears. "Dre, thank you so much."

Roberson did not play in yesterday's 114-112 loss to the Timberwolves as he recovers from a ruptured left patellar tendon. He suffered the injury last year, but has endured numerous setbacks in rehab. His timetable to return is unknown.

Roberson last played in the 2017 season and started 39 games, including five in the postseason. He averaged 5.0 points per game, 1.2 steals, 1.2 blocks and 4.7 rebounds in the regular season.

The 6-foot-7, 210-pound guard's defensive ability has been his greatest skillset throughout his career. Roberson was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2017.
