NBA Finals: Curry, Warriors beat Cavaliers in Game 2

June 4 (UPI) -- Stephen Curry hit an NBA Finals record nine 3-pointers in the Golden State Warriors' 122-103 victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the series in Oakland.

"Regardless of how the season went, that's a pretty cool deal to accomplish," Curry told reporters. "Knowing who has held the record for six or eight years. But at the end of the day, it's all about trying to get a win and doing whatever you can to make that happen."

"I always say that if we focus on that, good things happen individually all across the board. I never woke up was like alright, lets go get nine threes and get the record."

Curry had a game-high 33 points in Sunday's win at Oracle Arena. The Warriors now hold a 2-0 lead in the series. LeBron James had 29 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. The Cavaliers took the defeat despite James getting help from his cast, including 22 points and 10 rebounds from Kevin Love and 15 points from George Hill.

Cleveland stayed in striking distance for the majority of the game, before Curry caught fire in the fourth quarter. His trey tally surpassed Ray Allen's previous NBA Finals single-game mark of eight 3-pointers, which was set in 2010.

"It's hard to think back to all of the games, but [Curry] was tremendous," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "He seemed to hit a big shot every time we needed him. He was fantastic."

Golden State began the bout going 7-for-7 from the floor and earning an early 15-6 advantage. The Warriors led 32-28 after the first quarter. James had 10 points, while Curry led Warriors with seven points in the frame.

The Warriors outscored the Cavaliers 27-18 in the second quarter. Golden State went on a 7-0 run from 7:10 to 6:12 in the frame, before ending the quarter with an 8-0 run from 2:04 to 0:44. The Warriors claimed a 59-46 edge at the break.

Cleveland began the third quarter on a 7-2 run and eventually cut the Warriors' lead to five points in the quarter. The Cavaliers outscored the Warriors 34-31 in the frame, making the score 90-80.

James hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter, but Curry quickly answered with back-to-back shots from downtown.

That was just the start for Curry. He went off for 16 points in the frame and did not miss from downtown. Curry drilled trey after trey, hitting five or his nine 3-pointers down the stretch and closing out the Cavaliers.

"It's tough. He makes tought shots, that's what he does," Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said. "Even switching the pick and roll, having a five man guarding him. He makes a move, you get a good contest. But once he releases it, he sees the basket, he usually makes it. He is going to make tough shots. That's what he does."

Game 3 is scheduled for 9 p.m. Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
