Hawks' Schroder: I cannot finish second-to-last in East

Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder will meet with the team to discuss his future and from the sound of things, he may be ready to move on.

"I want to compete," he told reporters at the German Basketball Federation press conference. "I cannot be second-to-last in the Eastern Conference."

Schroder and the Hawks finished 24-58 -- which actually was dead last in the East. Since the end of the season, they parted ways with coach Mike Budenholzer and hired Lloyd Pierce, an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, as Budenholzer's replacement.

Schroder didn't comment on the coaching change, but he did shed some light on organizations that have caught his attention: namely, the Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks.

"Those are the two teams where you can say the organization is going in the right direction," Schroder said.

Schroder, 24, has three years and $46 million left on his contract, so a trade won't necessarily be easy. But as is so often seen in the NBA, where there's a will (and a willing trade partner), there's a way.

"I will be 25 in September and of course you want to win a title sometime," Schroder said. "In my prime -- 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 -- I want to compete."

He added, "Atlanta is my city. I was drafted there, have a lot of memories. But like I said, I have to look individually what is best for me."

Schroder led the Hawks with averages of 19.4 points and 6.2 assists in 67 games this past season. His meeting with general manager Travis Schlenk and the ownership group is expected to take place next week, Schroder said.
