Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell had the dunk of the holiday season

By Alex Butler

Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Rookie Donovan Mitchell's hops have hops. He proved that again Tuesday with a ridiculous tomahawk slam-dunk for the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz lost the game 107-83 to the Denver Nuggets, but Mitchell's dunk was the most memorable takeaway.

Mitchell took flight with 6:24 remaining in the contest. He took a pass from Ricky Rubio from the right corner and dribbled past and over pursuing Jamal Murray. He ran into the paint before picking up his dribble, rising up and cranking back his right arm.

Mitchell then absolutely stuffed in the jam, right in front of Nuggets guard Will Barton.

His successful attempt only got the Jazz to within 16 points of the lead. Mitchell scored 13 points and had six assists and three rebounds in the loss. Murray scored a game-high 22 points for the Nuggets.

Mitchell was the No. 13 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The Nuggets traded Mitchell to the Jazz in exchange for Tyler Lydon and Trey Lyles on draft day.

"I'm past that," Mitchell told the Denver Post this week. "Maybe the first week I was like, 'Man, I got traded.' You learn the business within the first two or three minutes of being in the league ..."

"I'm happy where I'm at. I'm blessed to have this opportunity. Just treating it like a regular game, not really looking at it like oh, this is the team that traded me."

The Louisville product is averaging 17.9 points per game this season for the Jazz.

"He's [Mitchell] really good," Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George recently told reporters, according to ESPN. "He's a tough, fearless kid. We all saw that working out with him this past summer. I knew he was going to blossom."
