Coach Rick Carlisle told the team website that Noel will be sidelined at least several weeks.
Noel has been out since a Nov. 22 contest against the Memphis Grizzlies, but the injury wasn't divulged until prior to Wednesday's game against the Boston Celtics.
The 23-year-old Noel is averaging just 4.0 points and 4.1 rebounds this season, well below his career averages of 9.5 points and 7.2 rebounds.
He is in his first full season with the Mavericks. Dallas acquired Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers prior to last season's trading deadline.
