Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James made the comments after a 111-104 victory against Smith and the Mavericks. Smith netted 21 points and had seven assists and five rebounds in the loss. James scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds and four assists for the Cavaliers.
"The Knicks passed on a really good one, and Dallas got the diamond in the rough," James told reporters, according to the Dallas Morning News. "He should be a Knick. That's going to make some headlines, but he should be a Knick. Dallas is definitely, I know they're excited that he didn't go there."
Smith, 19, was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. He went one pick after the Knicks picked point guard Frank Ntilikina out of Ixelles, Belgium.
Ntilikina, 19, has postecd 4.4 points, 5.0 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game in 10 contests for the Knicks. Smith is averaging 14.8 points, 5.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Ntilikina's Knicks teammate Enes Kanter, who was traded to the Knicks in September, said that the Knicks "love" their rookie point guard.
"Nope!! We love what we got...Thanks!!!" Kanter tweeted Sunday.
The Knicks face the Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
