Sept. 29 (UPI) -- One Dallas Mavericks fan sent Dirk Nowitzki a card and $20 as appreciation for the star taking salary discounts throughout his career.

Nowitzki posted about the gesture Friday on his Twitter account.

"Got this from a fan today at open practice... much appreciated," Nowitzki wrote as the caption for his Twitter post.

The photo featured the 13-time All-Star holding the card and the cash.

"Thank you for 20 years of pure greatness," the letter said. "It's been an honor to watch you play from a kid to an adult. If this is indeed your last season thank you Dirk Nowitzki!!!!! I don't care what the critics say, your the greatest to ever play!!! Thanks Dirk!!! I think I speak on behalf of Dallas that we truly appreciate everything you done for the city."

"You been taking discounts the past 6 years to help the team bring talent and a title...lunch is on me big fella!"

Nowitzki, 39, is due $5 million this season. He has a $5 million team option in 2018.

The 7 foot Mavericks legend made $25 million last season. The team declined his $25 million option for this season to sign him to a more reasonable deal. Business Insider reported in July that Nowitzki has sacrificed as much as $194 during his career by signing discounted contracts.

Nowitzki was the No. 9 overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft.
