James appeared in a video before the festivities began. The Plaza Hotel event is part of United Nations General Assembly week.

"I was asked to start this meeting to set a tone...to talk about leadership. But I don't think anyone in this room really needs me to set a tone," James said in the video. "We all know what's happening right now...how hard it is suddenly to understand so much in this world."

The conference included world leaders and top CEOs. President Bill Clinton was a featured speaker. President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday.

"You're in this room for a reason, the same reason I'm talking to you: Because we're leaders," James said. "We all know the world needs us to step up."

"Today, the world is looking to you. Listen to them."

"You don't need me to set the tone. All of you know what is happening. But I hope and I pray that you know how much all of us need you now."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron and Apple CEO Tim Cook also attended the event.

"At the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, hosted during UN General Assembly week in New York, this community will work together, through on-the-record mainstage discussions and private bilateral and multilateral meetings, to address the most pressing economic issues facing us today," the forum's website says.

Participation in the event was by invitation only.
