Cunningham became a free agent when he declined a $3.1 million player option with the Pelicans for the 2017-18 campaign. He was unable to obtain a multiyear deal and considered one-year offers from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors before agreeing to return to the Pelicans.

Cunningham averaged 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 66 games for New Orleans last season.

He owns career averages of 6.1 points and 3.8 rebounds in eight seasons with Portland, Charlotte, Memphis, Minnesota and New Orleans.
