Minnesota Timberwolves' Taj Gibson donates $20K to campaign for daughter of slain mother

July 26 (UPI) -- NBA star Taj Gibson was rewarded with a $28 million contract this offseason. He put that money to good use this week with a significant donation.

The Minnesota Timberwolves forward donated $20,000 to a GoFundMe campaign titled Remembering Chynna Ann Battle. Battle, 21, was killed on July 12 after two gunmen shot into a playground in Brooklyn, N.Y. She left behind a 3-year-old daughter named Amelia.

Shaqwanda Staley, 29, was also killed in the crossfire, according to the New York Daily News.

"Everything she did revolved around making sure her daughter was good," the account reads. "Amelia may not remember all the memories she and her mother made being that she is so young...What these cowards did to Chynna was cruel and reckless. Our family has set up this fund to assist with the day-to-day needs for Chynna Ann's daughter. She always wanted the very best for her "Milly" and worked everyday to provide for her. She had no pride when it came to working. We really loved her for her commitment, not only to her daughter, but to our family, and other kids in the community. I'm asking anyone out the kindness of their hearts to help make sure Amelia is taking care of. No donation is too small, any amount will be of great help."

Gibson, 32, was born in Brooklyn before going to high school in San Fernando, Calif. He was plucked out of USC with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. After spending the 2016 season with the Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder, Gibson signed a two-year deal with the Timberwolves.

The fund for Chynna Ann and Amelia Battle had reached nearly $24,000 of its $30,000 goal as of Wednesday afternoon.
