The Orlando Magic recently asked the Cavaliers for permission to talk to general manager David Griffin regarding the role of president of basketball operations, but Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has not responded according to The Vertical.

The Magic fired GM Rob Hennigan a few weeks ago.

Griffin's contract with the Cavaliers expires at the end of June. The Cavs have the right to keep Griffin through the June 22 NBA draft and can forbid him from talking with the Magic until free agency begins on July 1.

Gilbert may merely be trying to stall for time, hoping the Magic will simply look elsewhere to fill their vacancy rather than wait to discuss the opportunity with Griffin.

It is also possible Gilbert simply wants to wait until the Cavaliers' playoff run is over before responding to Orlando's request.

According to the Vertical, the Cavaliers have not made a significant offer to Griffin regarding a new contract.

Orlando will pursue other possible candidates in the meantime. Among those expected to interview for the Magic vacancy are Milwaukee general manager John Hammond, who has one year left on his contract, and Kevin McHale, who is working as a television analyst.

Interim Orlando general manager Matt Lloyd is also under consideration.

Yahoo! Sports noted that Griffin might pursue the Magic's opening because Cleveland seems unwilling to offer him a contract that pays a market-level rate.

Griffin was named the Cavaliers general manager in May 2014.
