Rudy Gay will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Sacramento Kings, according to a report Monday. Gay's agent, Roger Montgomery, confirmed to The Undefeated that his client plans to become a free agent.
The 30-year-old Gay, who signed a three-year contract extension worth $40 million with the Kings in November 2014, was scheduled to make $14.2 million next season.
Gay made the decision to opt out despite suffering a season-ending tear of his left Achilles tendon on Jan. 18. Montgomery said Gay is "ahead of schedule" in his rehabilitation and expects to return to the court in mid-June.
An 11-year veteran, Gay averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in 30 games with Sacramento prior to his injury. He averaged a career-high 21.1 points in 2014-15, his first season with the Kings.
A first-round draft pick (No. 8 overall) in 2006 out of the University of Connecticut, the 6-foot-8 Gay owns career averages of 18.4 points and 5.9 rebounds with the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors and Kings.
