Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin underwent surgery on Monday to repair the plantar plate of his right big toe, the team announced.

Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist, performed the operation in Charlotte, N.C. The team did not disclose the anticipated recovery time, but the expectation is that Griffin will be able to return for the preseason in the fall.

Griffin was injured during Game 3 of the Clippers' first-round Western Conference playoff series against the Utah Jazz. He missed the rest of the series, which the Jazz won in seven games.

Last year, Griffin also was knocked out of a first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers with a quad injury.

The five-time All-Star can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but the Los Angeles Times reported that the Clippers and Griffin hope to reach an agreement on a maximum-contract deal before then.

Griffin averaged 21.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists in 61 regular-season games in 2016-17. His career averages are 21.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 471 total games.
