NHL's Stanley Cup makes White House visit

March 30 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins fans are watching its 2016 Stanley Cup get further away by the second.

On Thursday, the NHL championship trophy made a random stop in Washington, D.C. The cup sat in front of the White House, just a mile from the Verizon center, where the hottest team in hockey plays.

This season, the Washington Capitals are on a collision course for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The 51-17-8 squad is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games, the same record as the No. 2 seed Columbus Blue Jackets. The Penguins and New York Rangers have also clinched playoff spots. The Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, have all clinched playoff spots in the Western Conference.

The Capitals are allowing the fewest goals against per game in the NHL. Before the Penguins' six game series victory against the San Jose Sharks last season, the Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings had claimed five of the previous six Stanley Cups.
