Don't expect that thorn to be picked out anytime soon. On Tuesday, Falcons coach Dan Quinn said that the team will "utilize them both" this season.
"We know both these guys are going to be a factor,'' Quinn told ESPN's Vaughn McClure. "We just had two running backs active [Sunday], so for the whole portion of the game, both of them have done significant things really well. We're going to utilize them both."
"Devonta has shown he's definitely capable of carrying a load all the way through. But the fact that we have two guys that we're able to feature is important. Both of them are going to be a really big factor in what we're doing."
Freeman had 20 yards on 11 carries Sunday in the Falcons' Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay. Coleman had 22 yards on eight carries. But Coleman was much more explosive in the passing game, hauling in five catches for 95 yards.
"I think it was one of those good games," Freeman said Tuesday on the Dukes and Bell Show. "You know the NFL, tough defenses like Tampa Bay. I always thought that was a great defense. They are underrated in my eyes. I think we just got to do a better job of working together as a unit and making plays. Whatever the coaches call, we gotta go out and execute to the best of our abilities. Last week, they made some plays and made a lot of good plays in critical situations."
"It's hard, I really couldn't get into a rhythm."
Freeman, who had 1,634 yards from scrimmage, 73 receptions, and 14 total touchdowns during his 2015 Pro Bowl campaign, remained optimistic after the Week 1 loss.
"Just keep your head up," Freeman told reporters after the loss, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "You have a long season. It's only one game. It was big game, but every game is a big game."
"They had good defense," Freeman said, via the AJC. "There were holes. We had a game plan and they had a game plan, too."
While Coleman did enough to warrant an RB2 start in a deep league in Week 1, don't expect both backs to carry season long RB2 value in this Falcons offense. After all, Coleman was the starter prior to Freeman getting the job last season. If you are a Freeman owner, look to trade him now or wait until he puts up a big game, when you can sell him high.
