Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt met with New York Knicks president Phil Jackson to discuss the team's head coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

The meeting took place on Monday. Knicks general manager Steve Mills and Blatt were teammates on the Princeton basketball team in the 1970s.

The 59-year-old Blatt was 70-48 with the Cavaliers before he was abruptly fired in January. Blatt guided Cleveland to the NBA Finals last season and the Cavs were leading the East at 30-11 when he was fired.

Interim coach Kurt Rambis has remained a strong frontrunner to become the Knicks' permanent head coach.

Rambis has a career record of 65-164, including a 9-19 mark as the Knicks' interim coach following the firing of Derek Fisher this season.

Rambis, 58, has a longstanding relationship with Jackson, who at season's end complimented him for helping the Knicks run the triangle offense more effectively.

Rambis worked two stints as an assistant coach to Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers, joining him for four of his 11 championship rings.

Jackson also discussed the Knicks' vacancy with Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton earlier this month. Walton reportedly decided he was not interested in the job.
