New York Mets' Carlos Carrasco has surgery to remove bone fragment in elbow

Oct. 20 (UPI) -- New York Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment from his pitching elbow, the team announced Wednesday.

The club said in a statement that Mets medical director David Altchek performed the procedure Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

The Mets obtained the 34-year-old Carrasco from the Cleveland Indians in January along with star shortstop Francisco Lindor. Carrasco suffered a torn right hamstring during spring training and didn't make his debut with the team until July 30.

Carrasco posted a 1-5 record and 6.04 ERA across 12 starts for the Mets this season.

The 2019 American League Comeback Player of the Year is signed to a contract that pays him $12 million next season. His deal also includes a $14 million team option for 2023 with a $3 million buyout.

Carrasco's 2023 option would become guaranteed if he pitches at least 170 innings next season and is healthy for the start of the 2023 campaign.

Carrasco has an 89-78 record and 3.86 ERA in 254 career appearances (207 starts) with the Indians and Mets. He made his MLB debut in 2009 with Cleveland.
