Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who tripped over a base and injured his ankle in the Boston Red Sox's season finale, will not play in Tuesday's American League Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees, the team said.

The Red Sox announced their 26-man roster, which did not feature Martinez's name, Tuesday afternoon.

The four-time All-Star sustained a left ankle sprain when he tripped over second base while running to the outfield in the fifth inning of the Red Sox's 7-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday in Washington, D.C.

Martinez, 34, hit .286 with 28 home runs and 99 RBIs in 148 games this season. He hit an MLB-best 42 doubles for the Red Sox.

Starting pitcher Chris Sale, a seven-time All-Star, also wasn't included on the Red Sox's Wild Card Game roster.

Kyle Schwarber could replace Martinez as the Red Sox's designated hitter in Tuesday's lineup. The Red Sox are expected to start Alex Verdugo, Kike Hernandez and Hunter Renfroe in the outfield.

The Yankees also announced their 26-man roster Tuesday. They placed infielder D.J. LeMahieu, a two-time batting champion, on the injured list Sunday due to a sports hernia.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Sunday that LeMahieu is unlikely to play if the Yankees reach the ALDS, but could return for the ALCS.

The Red Sox will host the Yankees in the 2021 American League Wild Card Game at 8:08 p.m. EDT Tuesday at Fenway Park in Boston.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is expected to face fellow right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. The winner of the elimination game will face the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
