Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals signed veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright to a one-year contract extension for the 2022 season, the team announced Friday.

The Cardinals didn't reveal the terms of the agreement. According to MLB Media, the one-year deal is worth $15 million.

"I don't want to be anywhere else," said the 40-year-old Wainwright, who has spent his entire career with the Cardinals. "Who am I kidding?"

Wainwright has had a breakout 2021 campaign and will start for the Cardinals in next week's National League Wild Card game against either the San Francisco Giants or Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander has a 17-7 record and 3.05 ERA in 32 starts this season, including three complete games and a shutout.

Wainwright has won 10 of his last 11 decisions, with 11 quality starts during that stretch.

"Adam has been a constant for the Cardinals for nearly two decades, and he continues to perform at an elite level that is historic in nature," team president John Mozeliak said.

Earlier this season, Wainwright joined Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson as the only Cardinals pitchers with 2,000 career strikeouts.

Wainwright, a three-time All-Star selection and two-time World Series champion, ranks third in Cardinals history in wins (184) and sixth in innings pitched (2,375 2/3).
