Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Dodgers star outfielder Cody Bellinger was activated from the injured list Tuesday, while veteran slugger Albert Pujols went on the team's COVID-19 list.

Bellinger was removed from the IL after missing eight games because of a broken left rib. Despite being activated, he wasn't in the starting lineup for the Dodgers' series opener against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old Bellinger is batting just .159 over 89 games this season. The 2019 National League Most Valuable Player has nine home runs and 34 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Pujols was added to the Dodgers' COVID-19 injured list Tuesday. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Pujols recently received his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and "just didn't feel good."

Roberts noted that Pujols will be re-evaluated Wednesday.

The 41-year-old Pujols has a .255 batting average with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs across 82 games since signing with the Dodgers in mid-May after his release from the Los Angeles Angels.

The three-time NL MVP ranks fifth with 679 career home runs, just 17 shy of tying Alex Rodriguez for fourth on MLB's all-time homers list.

Entering Tuesday, the Dodgers (100-56) sat two games back of the San Francisco Giants (102-54) in the National League West race.
