Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres placed left-hander Blake Snell on the 10-day injured list with a groin injury, the team announced Wednesday.

Snell landed on the IL because of a left adductor groin strain, according to the team. In a corresponding roster move, the Padres recalled right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson from Triple-A El Paso.

The 28-year-old Snell suffered the groin injury during the first inning of Sunday's 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. After retiring the first two batters he faced, Snell was going up against Trea Turner when the pitcher suddenly left the mound with a 2-1 count.

Snell was eventually removed from the game and limped slightly as he walked toward the dugout.

Snell, who was the 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner, has a 7-6 record and 4.20 ERA over 27 starts this season.

In need of rotation help amid a flurry of recent injuries, the Padres signed right-hander Vince Velasquez to a Minor League contract Wednesday.

Velasquez, who was released by the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this week, is expected to be added to the Padres' active 28-man roster this weekend and make a start during the club's three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
