July 9 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros placed star shortstop Carlos Correa on the injured list Friday because of MLB's health and safety protocols.

Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters that Correa was feeling unwell due to an illness that couldn't be diagnosed before Friday's matchup against the New York Yankees.

"If a guy's sick, he's sick. There's nothing you can do about it," Baker said. "He's day to day. We'll see.

"... If he says he's out sick, for this guy not to play, especially against the Yankees and [not] be in the starting lineup, then you know he's sick."

Correa, who was selected as a reserve for the American League in this month's All-Star Game, said Thursday he wouldn't attend the event at Coors Field because he wanted to spend the break with his wife, Daniella, who is pregnant with their first child and due in November.

The Astros put reliever Brooks Raley on the IL on Thursday because of health and safety protocols.

In 82 games this season, Correa -- playing in the final year of his contract -- leads the Astros with a .390 on-base percentage. The 26-year-old infielder also has a .288 batting average with 16 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Houston recalled first baseman Taylor Jones to take Correa's spot on the roster.
