June 29 (UPI) -- San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Gregory Santos was suspended for 80 games without pay after violating Major League Baseball's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
MLB said in a statement Tuesday that Santos tested positive for Stanozolol. While serving the 80-game suspension, he will lose about half of his salary, which is $46,600 while in the minors and the $570,500 minimum while in the majors.
"The San Francisco Giants are disappointed that Gregory Santos has violated the terms of Major League Baseball's Drug Prevention and Treatment Program resulting in his suspension," the team said in a news release.
"The Giants organization fully supports the MLB program and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing substances from our game."
Santos made his MLB debut April 22 and posted a 0-2 record and 22.50 ERA in two innings over his first three games before being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento less than a week later.
The 21-year-old right-hander has a 1-1 record and 5.17 ERA in 14 relief appearances for Sacramento this season.
Santos becomes the third player to be suspended this season under MLB's drug policy. Miami Marlins pitcher Paul Campbell and Colorado Rockies third baseman Colton Welker received bans earlier this year for PED violations.
