June 20 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Rays are calling up top prospect Wander Franco from the minors, the team announced Sunday.

Franco, the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball over the past two years, is expected to join the Rays on Tuesday for their series opener against the Boston Red Sox in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The 20-year-old Franco, who has been playing for Triple-A Durham this season, is a switch-hitting shortstop and can also play second base and third. He was informed of his promotion as the Bulls were traveling from Norfolk, Va., to Jacksonville for their next series.

"Of course, I'm ready to play in the big leagues," Franco said in February through an interpreter. "I'm ready to achieve the goal that I've been trying to achieve since I was a little kid, to make it up to the big leagues."
