June 1 (UPI) -- The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Kyle Lewis on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee, the team announced Tuesday.

Mariners manager Scott Servais called it a "small tear" during his pre-game news conference. It marks the second time this season that Seattle has placed last year's American League Rookie of the Year on the IL.

Servais said Lewis underwent an MRI on Tuesday morning, but it still remains unclear whether he will require surgery.

"I'm not exactly sure what the course of action will be through his rehab, if it is a scope-type surgery or what the deal will be there," Servais told reporters. "... The sad thing was he was on a great routine. He was feeling really good.

"I know just talking to him daily it's the best his legs had felt underneath him. We certainly saw what he was doing at the plate and the bat was really heating up. So we're going to miss him."

Lewis appeared to suffer the knee injury while trying to track down a fly ball from Sean Murphy in the eighth inning of the Mariners' 6-5 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday. Lewis made a leaping attempt on the ball and exited the contest before the start of the ninth.

The 25-year-old Lewis missed the first 17 games of this season after sustaining a deep bone bruise near the end of spring training. After a slow start, the young outfielder had turned it around, hitting .303 with two doubles and two home runs over the last nine games.

He also tore his ACL and medial and lateral meniscus in his right knee during a home-plate collision just weeks after he was selected with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.

Lewis has a .246 batting average with five home runs, 11 RBIs and two stolen bases over 36 games this season.

The Mariners recalled outfielder Taylor Trammell from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding roster move. Trammell hit .157 in 27 games for Seattle earlier this season.
