League sources told ESPN, MLB Media and The Athletic on Wednesday night that Royals outfield prospect Khalil Lee will head to the Mets, while Royals outfielder Franchy Cordero will go to the Red Sox. The clubs have yet to confirm the deal, which is pending medicals and approvals.
Right-handed prospect Josh Winckowski and a player to be named later will be moving from the Mets to the Red Sox in the deal, ESPN reported.
Benintendi missed most of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He landed on the injured list Aug. 12 with a strained right rib cage, with the Red Sox later ruling him out for the remainder of the year.
The 26-year-old Benintendi had only a .103 batting average with one RBI in 52 plate appearances over 14 games last season.
Benintendi, who finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2017, is a career .273 hitter. He led all Red Sox players with 15 runs scored during the team's 2018 postseason run that concluded with a World Series championship.
He has one year left on a two-year, $10 million deal that he signed in February 2020. He becomes eligible for arbitration in 2022 and free agency in 2023.
