Twins re-sign slugger Nelson Cruz with 1-year, $13M deal

Feb. 3 (UPI) -- All Star slugger Nelson Cruz is headed back to the Minnesota Twins after he agreed to a one-year contract with the American League Central franchise.

Sources told MLB.com, ESPN and the Star Tribune on Tuesday about the deal, which is worth $13 million. The contract, which Cruz confirmed on social media, is pending a physical.

Cruz, 40, hit .303 with 16 home runs and 33 RBIs in 53 games last season for Minnesota.

The 16-year veteran and six-time All Star hit .311 with 41 home runs and 108 RBIs in 120 games during his 2019 campaign. Cruz helped the Twins set the MLB single-season record for home runs that season.

The designated hitter has a .278 average with 417 home runs for his MLB career. Cruz first joined the Twins as a free agent signing before the 2019 season. He played on a $12 million option in 2020.
