July 29 (UPI) -- A day after the Toronto Blue Jays utilized a seven-run comeback to their advantage, the Tampa Bay Rays duplicated the feat against their AL East Division rivals.
Down 8-1 in the sixth inning, Tampa rallied and scored the game's final six runs in a 10-9 victory over the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto. The victory came after Toronto, which trailed 9-2 in the sixth inning Saturday, won 10-9 in 12 innings.
It was the first time in Major League history that a team won after trailing by seven or more runs (which Toronto did Saturday), and then lost its next game after leading by seven or more, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"Obviously, a tough loss last night, and they showed the ability to get down and come back," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "[That] says a lot about this team and how it competes. I'm really impressed with everybody's performance to get us back and help us win the game."
The Rays came back from seven runs down for the first time since a 10-8 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 18, 2012, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Designated hitter Ji-Man Choi led the charge with thee hits, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Teammates Guillermo Heredia and Willy Adames added eighth-inning home runs to tie the game.
Joey Wendle gave the Rays the lead in the ninth inning on an RBI groundout.
"Unfortunately we lost yesterday, but it was fortunate enough for us to come back and win the series," Choi said. "We're all just working hard to play baseball and bring wins to the team."
Tampa Bay is 60-48 this season. The Rays are 1/2 a game behind the Oakland Athletics for the American League's second Wild Card spot.
