Carlos Correa hits first grand slam, Astros snap Cardinals' winning streak

July 28 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros snapped the St. Louis Cardinals' six-game winning streak and Carlos Correa hit his first career grand slam in an 8-2 triumph Saturday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt also tied a team record by homering in his sixth consecutive game in the loss. Astros starter Gerrit Cole served up the solo homer, but it proved to be his lone mistake. Cole picked up his 12th win of the season by allowing four hits and one run in seven innings against the Cardinals.

"It was the first one. Obviously, you don't forget things like that," Correa told reporters. "It was pretty special."

Houston plated two runs in the top of the first inning before Correa came to the plate in the third frame for some major insurance. George Springer led off the third inning by lining out to left field. Cardinals starter Daniel Ponce de Leon proceeded to walk Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley, loading the bases for Correa. The Cardinals replaced Ponce de Leon with pitcher Michael Wacha for the exchange.

The Astros slugger worked the count to 2-2 before lifting a Wacha fastball to right center field for a 367-foot grand slam. The homer had an exit velocity of 101 mph and left the field in 4.8 seconds, according to Statcast. Correa's homer also gave the Astros a 6-0 lead.

Goldschmidt hit his 24th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth frame for the Cardinals' first run. Springer plated Josh Reddick and Robinson Chirinos on an RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning, giving Houston an 8-1 lead.

Jose Martinez plated the Cardinals' final run by grounding into a force out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Correa was 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored in the win. Altuve, Chirinos and Yuli Gurriel also record two hits apiece in the victory.

The Cardinals host the Astros at 2:15 p.m. EDT Sunday in St. Louis.
