May 23 (UPI) -- New York Mets outfielder Carlos Gómez lost his left shoe running the bases in Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals.
With none out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gómez took off for second base. Gómez took off for third when Nationals catcher Yan Gomes' throw went into center field.
Gómez's shoe fell off between second and third base. He made it to third base safely and scored one batter later on Juan Lagares' sacrifice fly to right.
Gómez, 33, entered Thursday's game with one hit in 13 at-bats this season. Gómez reached base in the fifth inning on his second hit of the year.
The two-time All-Star debuted with the Mets as a rookie in 2007. He was traded that off-season to the Minnesota Twins for two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana.
The Mets entered Thursday with a 23-25 record. New York is 4 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East Division.
