Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have released shortstop Troy Tulowitzki despite still owing him $38 million.

Toronto announced the move on Tuesday, making Tulowitzki a free agent. Tulowitzki, 34, is a career .290 hitter with two Gold Glove awards and five All-Star appearances. He has played in just 66 games over the last two seasons due to injuries.

He is owed $20 million in 2019, $14 million in 2020 and has a $4 million buyout in 2021.

"2Lo is my dawg man," Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman tweeted Tuesday. "Super sad to see my brother go. He's a winner. Unreal clubhouse presence. Always willing to help and mold young players. One of the best baseball minds I've ever been around. His career is far from over. See you soon my bro!"

Tulowitzki missed the entire 2018 season. He hit .249 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs during the 2017 campaign. His last All-Star season came in 2015, when he hit .280 with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs in 128 games for the Colorado Rockies and Blue Jays.

Tulowitzki played for the Rockies from 2006 until being traded during the 2015 season to the Blue Jays. He was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft.
