Yankees re-sign OF Brett Gardner to one-year deal

Nov. 1 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Brett Gardner to a one-year contract for the 2019 season.

New York made the move after declining the 2019 club option on Gardner's previous contract. The Yankees announced the move on Wednesday. A source told MLB.com that Gardner's deal is for $9.5 million next season, including a $7.5 million base salary and a $2 million buyout, as the Yankees did not pick up Gardner's $12.5 million option.

Gardner, 35, hit .236 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs in 140 games this season for the Yankees. He also scored 95 runs. The 2015 All-Star has played his entire 11-year MLB career for New York, making his debut on June 30, 2008.

"I wasn't sure what to expect at the end of the season, but being able to come back and rejoin this special group of guys we have in place, continue my career in a Yankees uniform -- and hopefully finish it in a Yankees uniform -- it means a great deal to me," Gardner told MLB.com.

"We have some unfinished business. It was tough to sit back and watch the rest of the postseason this year. It was a great learning experience for us. We have a young team and had a great season, but we came up short of our goal."
