Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Infielder Matt Davidson managed to strike out slugger Giancarlo Stanton during a Chicago White Sox loss to the New York Yankees.

The fanning occurred in the top of the ninth inning of the 7-0 blowout Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The White Sox held the seven-run lead entering the final frame when Davidson took the hill replacing Thyago Viera.

He began the inning by getting Brett Gardner to ground out. Then the 2017 National League MVP walked to the plate. Stanton fouled off a 91.6-mph fastball on Davidson's first offering. He then took another fastball for a ball. Stanton fouled off another fastball on the third pitch of the exchange.

He also fouled off a 72.4-mph curveball from the righty. Davidson's final effort was a 71.4-mph curveball. Stanton took a big hack and came up with only air. He smirked toward the dugout before taking his seat.

Davidson walked Didi Gregorius before allowing a single to Aaron Hicks in the next two at-bats. He got out of the inning by getting Gleyber Torres to fly out to right field.

Monday's relief appearance wasn't the first time Davidson has been called upon to take the mound. He also pitched one inning in a White Sox loss on July 27 against the Toronto Blue Jays. His first appearance this season came on June 29 in a loss to the Texas Rangers. He also had a strikeout in that one-inning showing in Texas.
