Dodgers' Muncy homers, ball comes back to hit outfielder in head

June 28 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy hit a home run, which bounced back onto the field and hit an outfielder in the head during a 7-5 win against the Chicago Cubs.

Muncy's mash came Wednesday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers trailed 2-0 after a two run homer from Willson Contreras in the top of the first inning. Joc Pederson began the bottom of the frame by lining out to Jason Heyward, before Muncy stepped in to face Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks.

The righty tossed in an 88.5 mph fastball for a ball before getting Muncy on a called strike with his next pitch. Muncy then jumped all over an 87.6 mph sinker, sending it to deep center field.

Muncy's mash traveled 415 feet and left the field at 106 mph, according to Statcast. While it left the park fast, it came back onto the field in dramatic fashion.

After clearing the outfield wall, the ball bounced off of another barrier and returned to the playing surface, hitting center fielder Albert Almora Jr. in the back of the head as he trotted back into position.

The Dodgers claimed a 3-2 lead in the inning when Yasmani Grandal brought in Cody Bellinger and Enrique Hernandez on a two-run double. Muncy finished his day 1-for-4, with two runs scored, two strikeouts, a walk and an RBI in the win.

Pederson and Bellinger also homered for the Dodgers.
