Rays' Hechavarria makes out off of Tropicana Field roof

June 25 (UPI) -- The roof at Tropicana Field helped Adeiny Hechavarria take a possible home run from Clint Frazier in the Tampa Bay Rays' 7-6 win against the New York Yankees.

Hechavarria made the peculiar play in the top of the ninth inning Sunday in Tampa, Fla. Frazier stepped up to the plate with the game tied at 6-6.

He led off the frame by taking an 80.1 mph slider for a called strike. He then took a ball, before mashing an 83.5 mph slider deep down the left field line. It looked as though Frazier had hit a go-ahead solo home run, but the roof had other ideas.

The hit smacked into a speaker connected to the roof and flew back down toward the infield. An alert Hechavarria bolted through the infield dirt and caught the ricochet in shallow left field, securing the first out of the inning.

Hechavarria not only did a good job of making the play, but also deserves praise for knowing the rules of the ball park. Balls hit off of some areas of the Tropicana Field roof are deemed as in play.

The Rays ended up winning the game on Jake Bauers' walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning. Frazier was 0-for-1 on the day, with his lone at-bat coming as a pinch hitter. Hechavarria went 1-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a strikeout in the win.

He hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game at 3-3.
