Braves' Charlie Culberson crashes into wall, still makes catch

By Alex Butler

June 19 (UPI) -- Atlanta Braves outfielder Charlie Culberson had no regard for personal safety when making a catch Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Culberson's sensational grab came in the first inning at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Braves starter Mike Soroka began the game by allowing a double to Curtis Granderson. He got Justin Smoak to line out to left field before striking out Teoscar Hernandez.

Soroka walked Yangervis Solarte before Kevin Pillar stepped to the plate. Granderson and Solarte each advanced to the next base during that exchange, due to a passed ball.

The Braves righty then fell behind 2-1 in the count to Pillar. The Blue Jays center fielder ripped his fourth offering deep to left field.

Culberson gave chase immediately in the scoreless game. He raced toward the warning track before sticking out his gloved left hand and saving a few runs.

But after making the catch, Culberson slammed into the LED board along the fence line. The left fielder stayed on the ground for a moment before eventually walking off of the field under his own power.

The effort earned a round of applause and a hug from Soroka.

The Braves led the Blue Jays 8-4 after five innings. Culberson also hit his fourth home run of the season, with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
