German Shepherd ditches dog night to take part in Minor League warmup

By Alex Butler

June 14 (UPI) -- A German Shepherd was on the loose, chasing a ball around the infield during a Tulsa Drillers and Northwest Arkansas Naturals Minor League Baseball game.

The pooch pursuit occurred in between innings Wednesday at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla. The Naturals came out of the game with an 8-6 win.

Fans were participating in a contest with their dogs during the sequence. The German Shepherd stood near the dugout while two more dogs were closer to the action on the field. The three dog owners gave pep talks to their canines. But the German Shepherd never looked at its owner.

Instead, the dog kept a laser focus on the Naturals, who were tossing the ball around the infield. Eventually, the German Shepherd broke free, pulling its leash from the owner and dashing onto the diamond.

The dog first went toward the catcher, before sprinting at the shortstop. The shortstop alertly flipped the ball into foul territory, pulling the dog's attention off of the field. The dog picked up the ball with its teeth, before turning around and tagging third. It then brought the ball back to the shortstop, who grabbed its leash and gave it back to the owner.

But the dog wildly pulled back when it saw the baseball and wanted to play more. Team staff eventually handed a baseball souvenir to the woman and sent her on her way.

The Drillers are the Los Angeles Dodgers' Double-A affiliate and were hosting Back in the Park Night for the second time this season.
