Tampa Bay Rays ballboy flashes range with catch on fence

June 13 (UPI) -- A ballboy for the Tampa Bay Rays flashed some leather, making a great catch in foul territory Wednesday at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Fla.

The Toronto Blue Jays were at the plate in the top of the first inning of the Rays' 1-0 victory. Rays starter Wilmer Font allowed a single to Curtis Granderson in the first at-bat of the contest. Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak then stepped into the box.

Smoak sprayed Font's first offering foul before settling in for the second pitch of the exchange. Font tossed in a 95-mph fastball and Smoak knocked it foul once again. This time, the ball cruised toward the seats in foul territory along the third baseline.

The ball was about to fall into the first row of seats before a Rays ballboy came sprinting over. He lunged toward an usher as he was jumping out of the way. The ballboy then snatched the ball with his gloved left hand before his body hit the fence and he did several 360-degree turns.

Wednesday's web gem wasn't the first brilliant grab made by a ballboy this season. In May, a New York Mets ballboy pulled off a full-extension grab before face-planting into a tarp.

Rays third baseman Matt Duffy plated the only run of Wednesday's game, bringing home Mallex Smith on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
