Giants call up Pudge's son Dereck Rodriguez

May 28 (UPI) -- Dereck Rodriguez -- the son of Hall of Famer Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez -- was called up on Monday by the San Francisco Giants.

The 25-year-old was a pitcher for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats and playing in the Pacific Coast League before the promotion.

"Just got the best call of my life! It's show time," Dereck Rodriguez posted on Instagram.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound prospect's full name is Ivan Dereck Rodriguez. He posted a 4-1 record with a 3.40 ERA in nine starts this season for the River Cats. He was 1-for-4 at the plate in five plate appearances.

Rodriguez was a sixth round pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami.

Pudge, 46, hit .296 with 311 home runs in 21 seasons playing for the Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. The 14-time All-Star won 13 Gold Gloves, the 1999 American League MVP and the World Series in 2003 with the Marlins.

The Giants optioned Miguel Gomez to Double-A Richmond and designated D.J. Snelten for assignment to make room for Rodriguez on the 40-man roster.

San Francisco faces the Colorado Rockies at 7:10 p.m. Monday at Coors Field in Denver.
