Cards' O'Neill nails Royals' Goins at plate with six-bouncer

May 24 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill managed to throw out a runner at the plate on a six-bounce toss during a loss to the Kansas City Royals.

The improbable putout occurred in the top of the tenth inning during the Royals' 5-2 victory Wednesday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.

Royals left fielder Jon Jay was at the plate as the sixth batter of the frame. He stepped in to face Cardinals reliever Brett Cecil with teammate Ryan Goins on second and Drew Butera on third.

Jay took an 89.3-mph sinker for a called strike before hacking away at Cecil's second offering. He sent cutter to left field for a line drive single.

O'Neill gloved the hit, before deciding to gun the ball toward home. Butera scored easily on the play. Goins then rounded third, attempting to give the Royals a 6-2 lead.

Goins was beaten to the plate by a few yards. The ball took a bounce between second and third base and a few more bounces through the infield before slowly rolling into the catcher's mitt of Francisco Pena. The Cardinals catcher tapped Goins' left shoe for the easy out.

O'Neill's throw registered at 88.5 mph, according to Statcast. The Cardinals left fielder went 1-for-4, with a run scored and two strikeouts at the plate. Jay was 1-for-4, with an RBI and a strikeout out of the leadoff spot for the Royals.
