May 23 (UPI) -- Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier hit a deep fly ball and stuck it on the top of the outfield fence Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

The hit was recorded for a ground rule double, after missing a home run by inches at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn.

Dozier was the first Twins batter at the plate during the bout. He stepped in to face Michael Fulmer in the bottom of the first inning. Fulmer tossed in a 94.8-mph fastball for a ball, before Dozier fouled off a 93.2-mph fastball.

Fulmer threw a 94.7-mph fastball for his third offering. Dozier hacked at the pitch and sent it deep to center field.

Tigers center fielder Leonys Martin raced back to the warning track, hoping to track down the fly ball. The ball came down and landed at the top of a crease between two of the pads along the fence line.

Dozier was already rounding third base when he was told to go back to second base as a result of the oddity. But he didn't have to wait long to cross the plate. He scored two batters later when Eddie Rosario hit a line drive single off of Fulmer, tying the game at 1-1.

The Twins would not score again. Detroit got a two-run home run from Niko Goodum in the top of the fourth inning before an RBI single by JaCoby Jones in the top of the ninth frame. The Tigers left Target Field with a 4-1 victory.

Dozier went 1-for-3, with run scored and a walk out of the leadoff spot.
