May 23 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenire let his phone's ringtone give reporters advice following a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Gardenhire's phone rang during his postgame interview session on Monday at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn. The 60-year-old manager was talking about his pitching staff when Kelly Clarkson's Stronger filled up the interview room.
He had just finished a thought about the Tigers needing to score more runs, before a reporter was in the middle of another question.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," Clarkson belted from his cellphone speaker.
The call came from Tigers general manager Al Avila.
"You guys gotta get out because it's Al Avila," Gardenhire said. "He might want to fire my [expletive] so why don't you just go ahead and get out and figure out your own answers."
He then answered the call.
"Hey Al," he said. "I'm in a press conference right now. You want to talk to them? I can just put you on speaker right now. You can answer for me. You sure?"
The Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win against the Twins on Wednesday in Minneapolis. Detroit is now 21-28 on the season.
Gardenhire managed the Twins from 2002 through 2014, posting a .507 winning percentage and 6-21 mark in the postseason.
