Rockies' Trevor Story breaks up perfect game for Padres' Jordan Lyles

May 15 (UPI) -- Jordan Lyles lost his bid for a perfect game in the eighth inning of the San Diego Padres' 4-0 win against the Colorado Rockies Tuesday at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif.

Rockies shortstop Trevor Story denied the first no-hitter and perfect game in Padres history in with one out away in the frame. Story fouled off the first offering he received from the righty before eying his second offering. The Rockies infielder smacked the 86.8-mph slider for a line drive to left field.

Lyles walked the next batter and was removed from the game and replaced by Kirby Yates.

"After we struck out CarGo, that's when it kinda got real for me," Lyles told reporters. "The crowd started to get loud and then we made two good pitches to Trevor. Slider down and away, I saw the replay on TV. It was a good pitch. Exactly where I wanted to throw it."

After he made contact, being a pitcher you know places where balls land after contact. I felt there was a good chance it was going to find some grass. We made a good pitch. It was a clean hit so it was all good."

He allowed one hit and walked a batter, while throwing 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Lyles needed 85 pitches for the effort.

Eric Hosmer led the Padres at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Christian Villanueva hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Lyles is now 1-1 on the season, with a 2.53 ERA. The 27-year-old played the 2015, 2016 and part of the 2017 season for the Rockies, before being released in August of 2017. He signed with the Padres seven days later. He re-signed with the franchise as a free agent in December.
