Earthquake hits during Reds, Giants game

May 15 (UPI) -- An earthquake occurred in the first inning of a game between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants.

The seismic sequence occurred during the Giants' 10-7 win Monday at AT&T Park in San Francisco, Calif. Reds first baseman Joey Votto was at the plate in the top of the frame as the third batter of the game facing Giants starter Chris Stratton.

The righty threw two strikes to the five-time All-Star. He was about to toss his third offering when the ground had a slight shake, rocking the game camera. Votto and Stratton didn't appear to notice the movement, continuing their exchange.

"I was feeling pretty good and then that earthquake hit and all of a sudden everything got thrown off right around 7:18 p.m. in the middle of my first at-bat," Votto told reporters. "Oh, I got taken out of the game because of it, are you kidding me? I'm a sensitive soul."

Votto joked that he got taken out of the game because of it. He actually had to be taken out because of back tightness.

The earthquake registered at 3.5, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The first baseman stayed in for a second at-bat, hitting a single. He went 1-for-2 on the day and is now hitting .291 this season. Adam Duvall went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs in place of Votto.

The Reds and Giants resume their three-game series at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in San Francisco.
