New York Mets bat out of order, cost themselves rally

May 10 (UPI) -- The New York Mets batted out of order during a 2-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

The miscue came in the first inning Wednesday at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. New York started the game with Brandon Nimmo striking out on three pitches against Cincinnati starter Sal Romano.

Then Wilmer Flores stepped to the plate. The Mets third baseman also struck out on three pitches. Asdrubal Cabrera followed that at-bat with what appeared to be a double.

But unfortunately for the Mets, Flores and Cabrera switched spots and batted out of order. Cabrera's double was wiped off of the board. Jay Bruce -- the Mets' No. 4 hitter -- was ruled out without even stepping to the plate.

The Mets had a different batting order than the one printed on the lineup card handed in to the umpire. Cabrera redeemed himself in the top of the third inning, bringing in Nimmo on a ground out and giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Joey Votto tied the game for the Reds with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth frame.

The Reds won with an Adam Duvall walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Bruce and Flores each went 0-for-4 on the day, while Cabrera went 0-for-3.

"I still have no idea," Bruce told reporters. "I wasn't part of it. I was skipped over somehow ... I'm not necessarily in a position where I just want to be giving away 0-for-1s. That's not ideal, for sure."

The Reds battle the Los Angeles Dodgers at 10:10 p.m. Thursday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mets face the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa.
