Jays' Solarte faceplants during horrible slide, hits game-winning grand slam

May 3 (UPI) -- Toronto Blue Jays infielder Yangervis Solarte had one of the worst slides of the season Thursday against the Cleveland Indians.

He also hit a game-winning grand slam in the top of the 11th inning of the Jays' 13-11 victory at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

His brutal slide went down in the top of the third inning. Toronto led 2-0 entering the frame. Teoscar Hernandez grounded out in the first at-bat of the inning. Solarte then stepped up to the plate to face off with Indians starter Carlos Carrasco.

The Indians righty got Solarte swinging with his first offering. Solarte then drove an 88-mph changeup to left field on the second pitch. Kevin Pillar walked in the next at-bat.

Then Russell Martin stepped up. Martin knocked Carrasoc's fifth offering of that at-bat for a fly ball to center field.

Bradley Zimmer caught the out, before throwing the ball in to second base. But Solarte bolted from the base, tagging up and running to third base. Solarte dove toward the base, but stopped in his tracks. He slammed his face into the ground before rolling over the base.

There was a short delay to assess the injury. Luckily for the Blue Jays, Solarte did not come out of the game. Kendrys Morales struck out in the next at-bat.

The Indians tied the bout 11-11 in the bottom of the eighth frame and the contest went into the extra innings.

Solarte stepped up to the plate in the top of the 11th frame to face Indians reliever Tyler Olson with the bases loaded. The southpaw threw two balls, before serving up an 88.4-mph four-seam fastball. Solarte smacked the offering from a grand slam to left field, putting the Blue Jays up 13-9.

Cleveland added two runs in the bottom of the frame, but Roberto Osuna escaped the inning on the mound to secure the win.

Solarte had a brilliant day at the plate, going 5-for-6, with six RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.
