Minnesota Twins sign manager Paul Molitor through 2020 season after historic turnaround

The Minnesota Twins signed manager Paul Molitor to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Monday.

Molitor, who was named as the Twins' manager in November 2014, will remain with the club through the 2020 season.

The 61-year-old native of St. Paul (Minn.) led the Twins to an 85-77 record this season, marking a 26-win improvement from the 2016 campaign.

Minnesota qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2010, becoming the first team in baseball history to reach the playoffs after losing 100-plus games in the previous year.

Molitor has recorded a 227-259 mark during his three seasons at the helm of the Twins, who dropped an 8-4 setback in a one-game playoff against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The first ballot Hall of Fame infielder was inducted in 2004 after 21 seasons in the majors. He played 2,683 career games for the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays and Twins, amassing 3,319 hits, 605 doubles, 114 triples, 234 home runs, 1,307 RBIs, 1,782 runs scored, 1,094 walks and 504 stolen bases, while posting a .306 batting average.

Molitor was selected by the Brewers with the third overall pick in the 1977 draft out of the University of Minnesota, where he played from 1975-77.

Molitor made his reputation with the Brewers, won a World Series with the Blue Jays and finished his playing career with the Twins from 1996-98.
