Former All-Star Raul Mondesi sentenced to eight years in prison

Former major league outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and mishandling of public funds while serving as mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic.

Mondesi, who was also fined 60 million pesos, was the 1994 National League Rookie of the Year. He had been under house arrest since February while awaiting trial.

The 46-year-old will be prohibited from holding any public office in the country for 10 years.

Mondesi served a six-year term was mayor of his hometown from 2010-16, according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101. He ran as part of the Dominican Liberation Party in the 2010 election but later switched to the Dominican Revolutionary Party.

An All-Star in 1995 and a two-time Gold Glove winner, Mondesi had a 13-year career in the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves and the then-Los Angeles Angels. He last played in 2005.

His son, Raul Mondesi, plays for the Kansas City Royals.
